Sculptures in Metal and Wood • Arturo Luz

Aug 16 to Aug 30, 2013 • Tall Gallery

National Artist Arturo Luz unveils a one-man exhibition of new abstract sculptures in metal and wood. Minimalist and geometric, this series of works delves into the various configurations of form embodying the themes that Luz has engaged over the years.

As a visual artist, Luz started merging sculpture and abstraction in 1969, veering away from figurative representation from then on in what art critic Dr. Patrick Flores terms as a “critical shift” towards a “feeling for form.” Flores notes that the work of Luz is an “important cipher in the many trajectories” of Philippine art history, marking developments in sculptural abstraction since the 1960s and merging sensuality, sentiment and space with the creation of form.

This exhibition of new works on wood and metal likewise points to different trajectories of the abstract. Luz imbues geometry with physical presence through creating modular forms, grids, cubes and blocks, standing solidly in space. He also indulges in the play of monochromatic surfaces and patterns, denoting a carnivalesque dance of shadow and light. Other objects alternately recall primitivist and prehistoric totems and pay homage to artistic personalities associated with the development of abstraction. These contradictions create archetypes and votive markers of both the forgotten past and the contemporary present.

Luz received the National Artist Award, the highest recognition bestowed on Filipinos who have made significant contributions to the development of Philippine art, in 1997. He founded the Luz Gallery in Manila and served as a founding Director of the Metropolitan Museum in Manila from 1976 to 1986. He represented the Philippines at the 1971 Sao Paulo Biennial.
